Tagged

Tagged.com bears a striking resemblance to MySpace and has one of the worst registration processes I’ve ever seen on a Web site, let alone a social network. I suspect sharing my information with the site will result in a lot of spam, because, during the registration, the site repeatedly asked me to opt-in to services that wanted my cell phone number to send me free stuff (the secret to this is that, by sending text messages to my phone, they can make money).

If you can judge a site by its advertisers, and it’s been my experience that you often can, Tagged is a site for the desperate dater and married cheat. If you want to meet someone for a fling, someone who is married for sex and so forth, Tagged has the ads you want. The tone of the ads and the minimalistic design of Tagged leaves a sour taste on my keyboard.

But the tawdry commerce doesn’t stop there. Members earn “money” for joining, making friends and sending invites to friends, which one can use to buy “pets”–that would be pictures of girls in bikinis. There is apparently some sort of speculative market in the value of pet pics, but how some of the members accrued up to $120,000 dollars is beyond me.

Tagged offers the standard social fare, including photo and video sharing, online games, and widgets from Slide, not to mention a “meet me” function based entirely on one’s sexual orientation, which is par for the course. There seems to be a lot of active users, but browsing users produces a lot of repeat listings, so there probably are actually quite few users online at any time.
