MySpace is one of the oldest social networks and certainly among the largest. It boasts approximately 115 million active members, slightly behind Facebook. MySpace, however, has been very diligent about creating localized versions of its site (that is, sites for countries that are in native languages), making it an inviting venue for people who want to start their online social life in familiar territory. Overall, the MySpace service globally is dominated by U.S. teens and 20-somethings, who visit the site millions of times a month.

MySpace personal pages serve as blogs and photo galleries. They are highly customizable, allowing members to share pictures, videos and music–as a result, pages can be loud, visually and aurally. These pages can be over-the-top, surprising to parents and adults. Over the years, many members have learned not to post images that are obscene or embarrassing, but I suspect that a generation’s worth of employment opportunities have been damaged by poorly chosen postings on MySpace. The site has also done more to damage human perception with badly designed layouts than most media, yet it is clear that the kids are having fun with it.

MySpace is focusing on making money by creating advertising and community-building opportunities for bands, movies and products.
